I'm having a problem with MS XP Home Edition (2002). Upon bootup, a message pops up - "MSSvc.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close."
I've done a search for mssvc.exe, and it's not found on my hard drive. I've looked at the error report generated, searched for the files mentioned (mssvc.exe.mdmp and appcompat.txt) and can't find those anywhere either.

Is there a way to fix this? Another user recommended installing Norton antivirus, but I've already got that running, and I have the latest updates for it. I also have the latest Window updates. It doesn't really mess up my computer, it's just hella annoying when it pops up every time I boot my computer.

Any ideas?

Install "Spybot Search & Destroy". It's a good program and may find what's causing this.

Spybod S&D, while useful, did not fix this problem. Upon booting my computer, I continue to receive the "MSSvc.EXE has enountered a problem and needs to close" message.

Hey thetsme; I have that same exact problem!
the files are located in system drive\docs and settings\yourusername\local settings\temp\WER1.tmp.dir00 at least that is where I found them. After I hit OK to send Microsoft the error report, the files got removed!
It happens each time I restart right after logon!

Yes. That's where the report says the files are located, but they're not there. The files got removed also, but the message continues to pop up. :|

I have been experiencing the same problem that you are describing for the past week. And then right after I got the message, the worm hit. Are they affiliated? I removed the worm.

Finally, someone else who is experiencing this...

Some details about this manifestation:

1. MSSvc.exe error on startup. It appears when the first user logs in, but all users see the message if they happen to log in first.

2. Attempts to run any MMC functions from Control Panel or access a command prompt from Run receive a "Windows cannot access the specified device, path..." error.

3. Attempts to access MMC functions from
c:\windows\system32 receive the following error: "Microsoft Management Console cannot be started. Re-run Windows setup. Main.cxx 208 80070005."

4. Attempts to run Windows Update to install Service Park 1 receive a FTP.exe error indicating the file is in use...even though I am not running anything that would use FTP.exe.

This problem began right around the time Norton Anti-Virus detected spybot worm on my machine. I followed all of the removal instructions on Symantec's web site, and, while it did apparently remove the worm, these problems persist. I also tried the following:

1. Logging in as another user including Administrator.

2. Booting up in Safe Mode.

3. Installing SP1. The update failed.

4. "Upgrading" Windows XP from the CD. This also failed inexplicably.

5. Stopping all unidentified processes.

6. Scouring the registry for references to Mssvc.exe and ftp.exe.

The inability to accesss Event Viewer and a command prompt severely limits my troubleshooting options to the point where the only option seems to be reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling the OS. I will try Spybot Search and Distroy, but any other insights would be greatly appreciated.
