i keep tryin to install teh new virsion of msn messenger, but when i click on 'next' in the install wizard, a notice says 'the installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2894' Then i click 'ok' and the install wizard says it has failed to install and i click 'finish'. Then another alert comes up saying 'MSN messenger setup has failed with error code 1603. Please go to the msn messenger website and download the software from there'.
Does anybody have a solution as to how to get rid of this error code, or how to install it at all?!?
Please and thankyou

vik_c: Error 2894 occurs when Riched20.dll failed to load, see;
http://www.installsite.org/pages/en/msifaq/error/2894.htm

I had the same problem with some other MSI install files; I am using Win 98 SE, and whenever I attempted to re-install Windows Installer, it would give me an error message saying that the service was already installed...okay, enough with the problems, I found a solution, and that is why I'm replying - in case anyone else runs into this.
The error code I received was 2894. What I did is do a search for Riched20.dll and renamed it to Riched20(dll).old; then, I did a little researching on Microsoft's website, and found all the available versions of the Installer (this actually is a search you can perform for Windows Installer in their download section - to save the time, just click here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?productID=9DD7A078-F8B0-457F-96CD-39C8428C2AEE&freetext=&DisplayLang=en)
Okay, now what I discovered worked on my Win 98 SE machine was to download ver. 1.1 of the installer (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f1b7a5b0-611b-45a7-a06d-cadff33e64da&DisplayLang=en), and install that - this time it did not give me an error message saying that the service was already installed. Once it was finished, ALL of my MSI install files worked without a hitch.
I don't know if this solution will work for other versions of Windows, but I'm pretty sure that if you use the search results page (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?productID=9DD7A078-F8B0-457F-96CD-39C8428C2AEE&freetext=&DisplayLang=en) and download an older/newer version, then install this, it will take care of a possible faulty install of the Windows Installer.
Good luck!
