Comment:

Hi have just changed to XP Home with SP1 on a Pentium 4 2.8 when first opening messenger it asked if I wanted to update to a new version which I obliged but now I have ended up with 2 versions on the task bar beside the clock 1 version 4.7 the other the new version 6.0. How do I get rid of the older version I can't seem to find away to remove icons from this bar. I have been into msconfig but their is only 1 instance of messanger in their. Can anyone help it would be appreciated. Kaz

Kaz,
MSN Messenger 4.7 is part of the XP system.
Go to control panel>add or remove programs> click on add/remove windows components. Scroll down to windows messenger with the messenger icon and follow the instructions to remove it. To remove the icon from taskbar right click on the taskbar and click on customize.

Hi Marty thanks for the help I did try what you suggested I went to control panel and removed MSN messenger 6.0 which left me with messenger 4.0 their is no listing in control panel to get rid of windows messenger 4.0. I then got a message to upgrade when I opened messenger 4.0 and did so now I am back to 2 versions I right clicked on the task bar the only option their is to hide icons not remove them why dosn't the newer version just replace the older one? This is damn annoying as I use messnger quite alot to contact family. I can't even exit out of messnger 4.0 as it says I have to shut down outlook express and internet explorer as well. Any other clues on how to get rid of the older version?

Kaz,
Did you got to add or remove programs and click on add/remove windows components as I said in my first reply.(It is on the left hand side, third option down). That is what I did, then I hid the messenger icon on the taskbar because when I clicked on it I got version 4.7 not 6.0. I then put a shortcut on my desktop for messenger 6.0. Good luck

MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger are different programs. You can uninstall MSN Messenger, but you can't uninstall Windows Messenger. They are both compatible with each other so you can still contact family members, even if they are using the one you're not. You can prevent one or the other from loading when you boot into Windows by changing the settings in the Tools ---> Options ---> General tab. Uncheck the box by: Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows. Your set, now you will only have one running in the task bar. (Don't disable both programs) Hope that makes sense. Good Luck!

Bob, you ended up being right, Marty the next time I booted up messenger was back again even though I unticked and removed it it only lasted until the next boot up. Bob I tried the link you left and downloaded the utilty and removed it. I have had to disable the configuration utility on start up though as it kept telling me the system had changed and it wanted to restore it. Should I have only disabled messenger maybe that way I could keep the configuration utilty going it may be usefull what does everyone think?
