How do I keep MSMSGS.exe process from running in task manager> processes? I've removed, uninstalled, disabled everything to do with MSN messenger. But it keeps loading under it's own power. I'll even end the process and sure enough in a minute or two it's back. PLEASE HELP, PLEASE!!!

JOAN, Try doing the following:
1. Go Start > Run and type in 'regedit'
2. Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER and go to the following: Software > Microsoft > Windoiws > Run
3. If you are in the Run folder, you will see something like: "MSMSGS REG_SZ "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background" -- Delete that.

If you do all of that, it should not start up, and you could uninstall it after that as well

Hope that helped!
Jim

I've run MSCONFIG from Start> run, and at the startup tab there is nothing for messenger in there, the only things checked are two from Symantec and two from Nvidia. Which brings up another thought; is it OK to disable "NWIZ" and "NVCPLDAEMON"? The card is G-Force4 AGP8x TI4800.
The reg hack; in the RUN folder all that is there is-
(default) REG_SZ (value not set)
Is that it?

Thank you for the help guys.

In Explorer, browse to the Winnt\inf folder. Look for a file called sysoc.inf. right click and choose open.

Now you will see the word "hide" in many of the lines, highlight and delete all the "hide" words and the comma that comes after it. Save and close the the file then go to the control panel and open up Add or Remove Programs. Click on the Add/Remove Windows Components and you will now have the option to remove messenger completly from your system.

Deleting the hide words in sysoc.inf will make those programs show up in Add/Remove where normally they would be hidden. You actually don't need to delete all the instances of hide but I'm not at my XP machine right now and I can't remember the exact line to modify. It doesn't hurt anyway to delete all the hides so just go ahead and do them all.

That should have been C:\Windows\inf, not C:\winnt\inf.

Kurt,
I did what you said and now I can't get into the ADD/REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS!!!
I "deleted all the "hide" words and the comma that comes after it". Saved the file and closed out, went back into ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, clicked on ADD/REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS and the Windows Components Wizard window pops up runs by its self saying Configuring Windows Components with a green status bar in the middle, then say "Completing the Windows Components Wizard. You have successfully completed the windows Components Wizard, click finish." I click finish the wizard goes away and nothing...I've rebooted 3 times and ran the wizard many. This isn't good.

Are you sure you didn't delete any other text?

I've had to patch approx 25 computers here at work with that fix and never had any problems with any of them.

It shouldn't have said anything about the components wizard either, it should have just opened up with more programs showing then before.

Hmmm. Not good.

First, MSMSGS.exe is not MSN Messenger. It's Windows Messenger, a completely different program.

You might not want to completely get rid of it. Depending on what programs you use, you might actually need it. I use MSN Messenger (msnmsgr.exe), but I notice the msmsgs.exe process still runs sometimes. It's not a big deal... Just prevent it from starting up with your computer. There's really no reason to remove it from a home computer.

Check here for more info, and a slightly better way to prevent it from running, other than modifying system files (hope you made a backup!).

CRAP,CRAP,CRAP....CRAP. Yes I made sure only to do just what you said. No of course, no backup, I've backed up my backups. But not now, It's a new install I just got done tweakin' the setting and installing all the software and everything the way I like it, so I COULD backup it up and have a reference HDD.
Dr.Nick,
any idea way messenger would run without me using it?

Kurt,
I went back and put comma's back without the word hide[.inf,,7 ] instead of [.inf,7] now all works fine.

Ahhh, there was your problem. Glad you found it!

The reason that Windows Messenger will run sometimes is that apparently MS decided to have other application use it in various ways. For example, when I open Outlook XP, it also starts the msmsgs.exe process. The icon doesn't show up, and it doesn't try to sign on, but I guess it's using it somehow.

You'll probably be alright without it, but I would still suggest leaving it on the system, but removing it from all startup locations.
