I think MSN messenger decides to let all my contacts know I've signed in.
Is tere a way to stop this other than blocking all the contacts?

Click on the status arrow beside your username and select "Appear Offline."

Yes but by doing that, I think contacts can still see when I sign-in even though I immediately appear offline .

That's correct. Until MSN allows the option to login as "appear offline" you'll need to change that as soon as you authenticate.

So, actually it's a bit of a useless option as far as preventing users from seeing you sign in then?

I imagine blocking them, signing-in, maing yourswelf appear offline, then unblocking them would do the trickeven though it's a bit long winded?

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for here, but you need to login in order to block someone. I'd only be speculating as far as why you want to go to all that trouble, so I won't.

It takes a fraction of a second to change your online status. So, for whatever your reasons are for not wanting people to know you're online, then that's my recommendation. Either that, or just leave Messenger closed. <shrug>
