Is there a way as an administrator to disable msn messenger for specific users? And if so, how? Thanks.

if it's ntfs partition then just deny them permission on the messenger file itself

Hi, at the Run command type in MMC. Click on File, Add/Remove Snap-in, Click on Add, then Click Group Policy. User or Computer Configuration, look for Administrative Templates, MSN Messenger is in there. Add the user to this Policy. Save the Snap-in, name it Messenger and it will be added to Administrative Tools. You must re-boot the computer for the policy to take effect.

I use MSN Messenger simply because some clients are using WinXP Professional. So I need it in a business way. However I don't want to have it begin running when I check email on my WinXP machine. I don't even want to see the silly little icon pop up in the task bar.

I have been able to disable it but I still get that damn icon showing up with a red x. How can I get it to stop popping in there all the time WITHOUT uninstalling/removing Messenger?

Many Thanks!

Found the following info at this site: http://dave-partridge.com/20%20xp%20facts.shtml

. After following the instructios, you should be able to uninstall Messenger using the Control Panel, as opposed to disabling Messenger.

"XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable."

Hello Dennis, don't worry we'll get this done for you, here we go:
Left click Start, Right click My Computer, click on Manage, click the -->+ Local Users and Groups, left click Groups Folder or right click to create a new group or if group is already created, right click on the Group name and choose, Add to Group, in the properties, click Add at the bottom left, in the box that comes up, type in the users name, if the name is correct, it will show up under Member in the Properties. If you have problems, email me the names and I'll create you a Snap-in to use. The Snap-in I'd create would be called Messenger.

(THIS SNAP-IN IS IN YOUR EMAIL)

Hi Will,
this is the Snap-in you can use to disable Messenger. Open it, then you will see two options to the right, right click, choose properties, choose enable, then configure the second. You can save this snap in where ever you want and I promise this will stop Messenger from starting up.
