MSN Messenger Freezes

I have a clean install of XP on a compaq. When I open MSN messenger, it will run slowly and freeze ... not lock up. When I restart and reboot, I get an error message from windows saying there is a problem with the video card. I did have some freezing problems when I first installed XP, but after updating windows, it stopped. Any suggestions? This is a 16mb nvidia card, I can get a model number later.
