msn messenger 6.1 freezes windows x

is anyone else having this problem, or does anyone know a fix?
everything works fine for a few days and then the computer starts freezing to the point that a hard boot is needed. this only happens when msn messenger is running and it happens frequently.....every few minutes.
i've tried everything else i can think of to sort out the problem, even reformatting and reinstalling several times, but the problem still persists. the only common theme is that the crashes occur when messenger is running.
