I have cable internet, connected to a router, and then on my computer I have a PCI adapter. EVERY game I get the "multiplayer status" screen, we all click continue but it never works. Then the game just quits after like 10 minutes. So I seem to always be the problem, some people on the Msn Gaming Zone told me that I have to open my ports or something. The router I have is a Net Gear. I posted the settings I have on the router, I hope that helps. Thanks.

Hi Marc,

The multiplayer-servers that you connect to, will need to be able to send data to your computer. On most computers, though, the ports that aren't normally used, are protected(=closed or hidden) by a firewall, so as to protect you from unwanted access to your computer.

You will need to open the port(s) that the multiplayer-server wants - this may differ from game to game, and from server to server (there are 0-65535 ports on every computer).

You can open a port by telling the router that it needs to "forward" the control over that port from the router to the computer.

The router needs to forward port number X from its IP (which is the actual IP you surf with - the outside IP), to the IP of your computer's connection (the LocalHost-connection - in your case: the IP of the PCI adapter network card).

You can find out what the IP of your PCI card is, by doubleclicking on its connection in 'Network Connections', or on its icon in the system-tray (if any). It should have a 'status' panel, and on the 'support' page, the IP address will be listed.

[HowTo] Netgear Port Forwarding

Note: a wireless setup can cause problems too if there's a large chunk of data involved, but for multiplayer gaming, that should not pose a problem as there's only a limited amount needed to communicate player's position & stuff.
