MSN and Yahoo messenger fault

CPU/Ram: Athlon 2.8/256

When in Yahoo chat and click on blue hyperlink, such as www.yahoo.com, it takes me to the yahoo messenger program FOLDER and not to either I.E. or Firefox. Also in both MSN and Yahoo chats when clicking on "help" nothing happens. It seems as if either program is not linking. Have uninstalled YM including from registry, and reinstalled and still get same fault.

Alan, could it be caused by a too harsh firewall setting?
