MSN and ICQ stops abruptly

When my DELL Inspiron 6000 is running with the power cord connected, MSN and ICQ works just fine. But when I remove the power cord, using the laptop on battery, MSN and ICQ stops abruptly. I try to start the applications again, but to no avail. I need to reboot the OS to get them running again. I find this very annoying. I would be very happy if someone has even the slightest clue of what is going on. A solution would save the day. Thanx in advanced.

what if you logoff of them before you remove the power cord, then start them up once the power cord is removed. what happens if you do that?

Kind of found the problem. When I disconnected the power cord, a pop-up window appeard, only to quickly disappear again. I had to be fast to press a link named "info". It was "Internal Network Card Power Management". There I had some options to tweak, and after that, everything worked like a charm. Now I'm happy again. Thank you.
