did you try to uninstall msn explorer from add/remove windows components? I think msn messenger related to msn explorer.

Windows XP comes with Version 4.0 of MSN or summet, and if you just have that on you can delete it by editing a file. http://www.xp-erience.org for how to do it .
If you have installed a later version you can't uninstall it. The only way i found was to delete the Messenger folder, and then install MSN 3.6. Problem is then you can't use things like the Talk Feature. MSN just crashes.

Open %Windir%\inf\sysos.inf (or sysoc, not sure). Replace all ",hide" whith "," (no quotes). Then reboot and now you can uninstall explorer and msn in your add/remove programs menu. Works for Win XP and 2000
