I have been using windows Messenger for some time now and have never had this problem untill latnight.

msmsgs.exe keeps loading on startup even though I have the box unchecked to run when windows starts. I have gone into msconfig and made sure that it is not there, and I have also gone into gpedit.msc and made sure for both computer and user congigurations that it should not run on startup. It still does.

When I try to exit out of messenger, it says that it cannot be closed because other aplications are currently using it. I have no other aplications (IE, outlok, etc)running. The only way for me to stop it is to end task in task manager, however, less than a minute later, it starts back up again on it's own.

I do use messenger and don't want to completely disable it, but I don't want it to be running all the time, especially not running in the background on startup and not even be in the sys tray. I first noticed it was doing this because it said I had new email as soon as I booted up. It has never done that untill lastnight.

I was at a LAN party this weekend and all of the Win 98 boxes had some virus that kept trying get programs to access the internet, however, none of the XP boxes were infected. I have run Norton Antivirus 2003 several times and it has located no viruses.

Thank you for any help you can give.

It tells you this if you have opened your email previously and have not read all of them. It keeps track of it until its read and then it goes away. This has occured since you would have set up you .NET passport.

I know how it works, what I was saying is, that's how I noticed it was running on startup in the background, by the popup mail notification.

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Messenger.MsgrObject
Right click on the Messenger.MsgrObject key and select rename. Rename it to Messenger.MsgrObjectold

I can answer this on immediatly, its a glitch in Norton 2003 that is causing the problem as soon as i installed it i had the same problem, you'll also find that you can't close msn messenger it keeps saying another program is using it ... that other program is Norton. Bin Norton 2003 until they get it sorted out is my advice, i'm back on 2002 again. A ord of warning though use the removal tool on the symantec website as 2003 doesn't install properly and keeps causing problems. Look at the C-net ebsite for more articles documenting this problem.

I thought I'd drop in my 2 cents...

Issue:
I have been wrestling this issue for a different reason. I was setting up my wireless laptop to hit the road. When I setup the software firewall, I noticed that msmsgs.exe kept popping a hole in the firewall. I didn't want this exposure. If you are out in the wild, keep this in mind.

Resolution:
I used brute force. I just renamed all the msmsgs.exe files. When I'm back in protected space, I figured I could name them back and no harm done. It's not elegant, but it works.

Open Regedit and go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F3A614DC-ABE0-11d2-A441-00C04F795683}\LocalServer32

Start by backing up this Registry key, in case you want to reenable it for some reason in the future.
Delete the entire line which displays the path to MSMSGS.exe from the "(Default)" String Value: double-click on it -> delete the entire Value data line -> click OK or hit Enter.
Close Regedit.
MSN Messenger will stop loading from now on.

If you have Norton AntiVirus (or SystemWorks), simply start the Norton program and choose option to disable protection from MSN Instant Messenger.

This is the best solution. I have tried it and it works! Too bad, Microsoft.

I can confirm an apparent conflict between Norton Systemworks 2003 and msmsg.exe. The good news is that, on my system (Win XP home), the fix is to simply go into the preferences for Norton Anti-Virus and uncheck the instant messaging protection for MSN instant messaging. Once I did this, msmgs.exe did not run. This does assume that you have unchecked the preference within Messanger to run at start-up. Good Luck!

Had the same msnmsgs.exe problem in XP Pro. Disabling the auto-protect msn instant messenger setting in NAV2003 corrected the issue.

The best you can do is to open messenger, go to extra - options and vink off "start with
Windows"
Then also start internet explorer and richt click on the messenger logo in your taskbar
then remove all third party software from running resident in explorer (ICQ also wants to ride with micr$%#@#oft explorer)try again.

It worked on my pc

I have a brand new Sony Vaio desktop computer with a proble running WIN XP Home (SP1 update) and all other updates.

Every 1 to 1 1/2 minutes my mouse pointer turns "busy" and the system does something for a second. It's very disruptive to work and it happens whether at the desktop or in a program. I've watched the system task manager (WIN XP Home) and it seems to coincide with a service process titled
"msmsgs.exe" as it comes up to a high CPU usage point.

It seems to be part of the MS Messenger stuff in the C:\program files\Messenger folder, so I've disabled it from the MS options "Set Programs and Options" thing on the Start menu. I've also "killed" the process in task manager and finally, unchecked the box "Messenger" under MS
services under startup MSConfig "Services" tab. The damn thing keeps ccoming back and appearing in the task manager and as soon as it does, my mouse pointer turns busy and there's a pregnant pause in the system performance. It also seems to be doing something with the disk.

This is a 2.5Hgz machine with 512 megs and 7200 RPM drives, so there's something else
going on that I'm missing perhaps. How do I stop this damn messenger thing from running at all and if it's not the problem, does anyone have any suggestions on what else it could be? BTW, I'm also running Norton 2003 System Works and Norton 2003 Internet Security.

Email responses would be appreciated as well.

Thanks
