The problem I'm having is that Outlook Express 6 runs but crashes after about 5 mins - I think this is happening when it's collecting new email. I've updated the machine up to the latest M$ Windows Update recommendations but no joy.

Specifics of the crash are that msimn.exe version 6.00.2800.1123 is causing an access violation in shlwapi.dll version 6.00.2800.1226 at 0x26CA6. This pops up the "We are sorry, have to terminate program, click to send M$ a bug report, etc. etc.".

I have searched the internet for similar problems but none match the errors I have. However, I have found that Bugtoaster.com list this error as reported by their users here: http://www.bugtoaster.com/dw15/Reports/ImageVersionDetail.asp?ImageVersionID=49817 but there is no extra info.

I have mainly been considering replacing the shlwapi.dll with an older version, maybe off the XP repair disk.

ANY suggestions are more than useful. Do you think that regressing a version or two will be helpful?

Your question was posted on, I believe the 20th, with no comment/response to date.

One would think that after 70 - 100 Error Reports to Microsoft, per day for the past 7 to 8 days, this situation would have a . . FIX.

Searching ng's - on a server - is no problem, however once I leave that News SERVER and go to another server OR inbox/sent/deleted, OE sends an Error Report and . . . CLOSES.

Same thing for "Local Folders", work in one, go to the next: ERROR REPORT and OE CLOSES.

HOWEVER it has been determined that I have THREE (3) [Versions] of shlwapi.dll:

C:\Windows\System32 6.00.2800.1226 C & M - 07/13/2003

C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 6.00.2800.1106 C & M - AH! The dates indicates that it was MODIFIED (08/29/2002), BEFORE it was created (10/12/2003).

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\System 5.00.2614.3500 C & M - 04/23/1999 (Kinda . . OLD, isn't it?)

Why do I have three (3) versions of the same file, one (1) of which, was modified, before it was created?

Is it possible that this an undetected version conflict and the source of the problem?

Thanks for the email... I had not posted my semi useful resolution.

I've since found out that the crash in Outlook Express outlined above happens when an IMAP folder is open, but not a local folder as used with POP download of email. Interesting that it also appears to be folder related.

I have since prevented this crash by changing how my client's machine downloads email from IMAP to POP with "leave messages on server" now turned on.

Outlook Express now runs without problems.

I had not considered looking for the different versions of the dll on the system - it would be excellent to actually fix this problem because shlwapi is used regularly by m$ programs all of which would crash if they made the same call.
