Would someone tell me if these items are normal, or virus related, when found in Win XP (home edition) msconfig/startup? (I have typed them EXACTLY as they appear)

taskmgr.exe
OSA.EXE
EXPLORER.EXE
SVCHOST.EXE
LSASS.EXE
SERVICES.EXE
CSRSS.EXE
SMSS.EXE
System
system idle process SYSTEM

I know some of them are to be found in XP task manager ... it's finding them in Startup thats bothering me.

(its a friends puter; she's having real bad probs; no internet, no sound etc ... I run Win ME and don't know much about Xp, so thanks for your help)

Hi,
With the problems that your friend is having; does she have anti-Virus software installed and up-to-date? Mabye you could also try some spyware removal software like Spybot Search And Destry. I had some problems a while back on a friends pc and it was full of viruses and spyware.

Hope This Helps.

Those are all normal startup items. The only one she can safely uncheck is OSA.EXE, that's Office Assistant and is not needed for startup.

Thanks everyone.

cyber_man; no, my friend is complete novice, new user; 'puter only 9 weeks old, no firewall, anti-virus or critical patches :-(

77 pieces of junk caught by adaware, Stinger didn't find any virus, but the 'puter is behaving real bad.

I've got a string going in security and virus; just wanted to check those items.

Thanks again for your time ;-)

No firewall, no AV, no critical patches = many problems.
