Hi, I tried to run msconfig today to close down some programmes i did not need, when i typed in run box, nothing happened.

Tried to locate file on XP disc but not found, also regedit will not open, Any ideas where i can get the missing file from (Msconfig.exe) as I need it desperately

Cheers

they are probably not missing, the reason you probably couldn't find them is because they probably hidden, the reason you can't execute them is probably because you have a virus and adware/spyware
i have seen it before and that was the cause of it
if that is not the cause then i would say download the msconfig file and regedit file off the internet and place it in the correct system folder

You may have a virus or spyware which is stopping you from opening these utilities.

Run an AV scan, and download AdAware, Spybot, and CWShredder, install them, update them, and run. Delete anything that looks suspicious. Some advise deleting everything because it's all reversible. Also get SpyWare Blaster which keeps a list of bad stuff on your computer and blocks them from being installed (theoretically). Be sure your independent (not MS’s) firewall is enabled.

Spybot

And could I just mention for all those here who so often need to dig into their startup programs the nifty little control panel applet Startup.cpl which can be found here:

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

This makes turning on and off startup entries (whereever they may be installed) very simple.

Also on Mike Lins site is his Startup Monitor which I've not used but which is supposed to warn you when somthing tries to add itself to your startup programs.

Hi,

Msconfig is not part of w2k, and if I remember right, neither is it part of XP.

Use the one from w98.

And, no, boys and girls, hiding a file won't prevent it from running.

Steve,

Did you read #6?

I can send you msconfig, but you need to email me. When I click a user's link I get the error which says I must be coming from computing.net [!]

Hi Josh,

You're correct.

I should not have assumed that he was running XP on C.

Nor should I have assumed that he knew which drive to look on.

A system file can be damaged in some way or another that makes it unable to start. I would suggest running sfc /scannow to let xp repair or replace the system files that may be damaged. If no joy you might consider doing a short hop restore. This means just go back in hours not days. Or do a last known good configuration.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

quick update

downloaded msconfig.exe from the net, nothing happened

ran sfc\scannow, nothing wrong there

did a search and found:

msconfig C:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386

tried that and nothing,

think i will have to resort to another start up control panel
