jrh61046, Update your virus definitions and run a full virus scan as it's evident that your computer has picked up a virus or Trojan. Check out the link below which also references Solarian's link for more info.

Why does Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappear while opening?

An alternative to MSCONFIG is to remove them from the registry. If you are not sure what the programs are that are starting in the registry, you can rename the .exe in the data section. Unlike, MSCONFIG there is not a check box, you delete the startup link.

These run everytime a user logs in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

These run in background during login prompt:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce

This one starts when you reboot your machine or add/remove programs:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ RunOnce\Setup

Good luck with finding the cause!
