Hello,
Will removing unused entries in MSconfig Startup cause errors or any problems; or is there really any benefit in doing so or is it best just left alone?
Thanks.

you should know WHAT you are about to disable.

hint: use Autoruns rather than MSConfig! why?

to be on the safe side, stick to the LOGON section.

the rule is: if disabling a start up entry turns out to be the cause of an error, you can always re-enable it.

IMHO I think that autoruns might be a bit too complicated for newbies.....it's like talking to a doctor that uses all the medical terms, complete jargon. For higher techs it is definately the software for them :)

The only start-up items I have on my PC are the AV, firewall, win patrol and spyware terminator.
I haven't had a problem with my PC set up that way and it loads up quite quickly.
I do that for most PC's that I repair and it seems to work fine.

To have more RAM available at startup,
You can do Start, then RUN, then type
msconfig
Then uncheck items in the Startup tab.

does or means, and any recommendation as to if you should close the process:

Forget about using Msconfig (a.k.a. System Configuration Utility). I use Mike Lin's Startup control panel because it shows the all startup program that originated from 5 different parts of Windows XP. Click on the link below for more info (it's a tool no one should be without. It also works with Windows Vista).

Yeah newbs might have problems with autorun not to mention several other things.

Anyway, back to the topic; in order to remove the unchecked startup items from the startup utility they can be deleted in the registry, what I wanted to know was, has anyone done that and were there any adverse effects from doing so, now there shouldn't be, but just wanted to see if anyone had any bad experiences is all, I already am familiar with unchecking the items.
Thanks.

NO they do not get deleted from the registry per se. They are merely prevented from running as a startup item. If you really want to uninstall a program, you have to do through its own uninstaller or from the Control Panel Add & Remove programs.

Well yeah, they dont get really deleted, only the the entry corresponding to the startup utility for example. Yes, I know, the only way to uninstall a program is through its own uninstaller or Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
It doesnt sound like it would be a problem then as its only an entry, just haven't ever bothered to do that is all.

Look at the following link. A small program that allows you to remove unused entries in the startup list. There is no problem removing these entries. I have three entries in my startup list and use this program regularly.
