I have juse encountered this problem of MSCONFIG not opening up. When I enter this command in the RUN mode, the window flashes for a second and dispappears. Prior to this, I had removed an expired Nortun Antivirus from the system. Apart from this obvious peculiarity, another problem that I have faced is that exe files of some major applications like the WINAMP and A.Reader are disappearing; their shortcuts on the desktop can not find their respective exe files on the defined path.

rups, SWAG, could your problem be Norton's related? As I understand it you can't simply delete it from ADD/DELETE. It has a specific uninstaller that knows where all the skeletons are.

It is a good idea to run the norton removal tool supplied by symantec.

Unfortunately simply uninstalling Norton AV doesn't remove it completely.

Be sure to select the correct version of Norton you uninstalled, download then run it.

Have you installed another anti-virus program?

It could be more then just a broken uninstall of norton, in which case it would be a good idea to run a full antivirus scan.

rups, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

You may also want to download and run the "Link File Fix for Windows XP" on line 12 (right column).

I have somewhat of the same issue, when I type MSCONFIG into the run dialog, it brings up an error dialog that says that windows cannot find msconfig. I have a program that i had downloaded that made emergency copies of msconfig and regedit and i am able to open msconfig from that shortcut the program made

The emergency copies of REGEDIT, MSCONFIG and Task Manager that shanna99 speak of can be download from the following page.

For an explanation of why does Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappear while opening, see the article below:

Thanks for your advice and support Friends. Actually, it was because of a Spyware embedded on to my computer. So, I just got it removed through an anti-spyware, and the problem was resolved. Thanks.
