Hi,
Could somone please advise me on how to (or give me a good link) on how to get file and printer sharing on my home network?
I have a cbale modem into a dlink wireless router from this I have a 98 box wired via ethernet cable and I have my XP laptop roaming on a wireless inetrnet connection via a wirless Orinocco PCMCIA.
The internet connection is fine and worked more or less on first time on setting it up.
Howver I have never networked for file sharing etc before and would really like to set-up file and printer sharing so that I can transfer/share mp3's and avi's etc with out currently having to copy them to CD or email them over to my laptop from my 98 PC which has all my files!?p.s I have installed m$ fiel and printer sharing on both machines and have looked at teh properties etc. and aslo I have specified shared folders on my desktop of the PC(98) for my laptop to share but i'm stuck as to what else to do!
Cheers

I am a little rusty on this, but here are some steps to think about.
You need to setup the same workgroup on both pcs. I would create similar users on both pcs. And you must successfully log into both pcs in order to "see" each other. Make sure your Windows98 pc has a computer name. Install the printer on your desktop pc, set it as shared and then go to network neighborhood on your laptop and look for your win98 computer name. Double click on it and you should see your shared folders and printers.
I did a peer-to-peer using a crossover cable a few years back. So definitely expect better advice.
MATT.

1. All computers on same workgroup
2. Each computer has a unique computer name--not
description
3. Physical hardware and cabling is good
4. WinXP--Guest account turned on
5. No firewall software on any computer--WinXP check for ICF on advanced tab of properties/network connection
6. no network bridges
7. WinXP- Network connections / TCP/IP /properties
WINS tab--enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
8. Shares on WinXP--not just Shared Documents folder
Then----go to command prompt
1. ipconfig /all
2. ping 127.0.0.1--4 replies--OK
3. ping IP Address--4 replies--OK
4. Ping IP addresses of other computers
5. Go to start / run \\IP address--OK
6. Go to start / run \\computer name--OK
should now be showing in Network neighborhood
or My Network PlacesThis should get things up and working--Good Luck
