Comment:

I got hit with the MS Blaster worm the other day & it totally disabled my system.

It even disabled my Norton Antivirus so I could not run a fix. I had to change the RPC settings in Win. Safe Mode, d/l the Symantec Fix Balst utility, & install the MS patch. The strange thing is the the Symantec Fix Blast utility did not find any Worm or Virus. Same with my NAV utility.

Now when I start up my computer, I still cannot access my Internet connection or any of my apps. & I notice the my Norton Antivirus is disabled. I then have to reboot then everything is normal & I can use my PC. I don't want to have to keep rebooting just to use my PC.

Does anyone know of a fix? Should I just reinsall XP?

did you remember to disable system restore (my computer properties then System restore)? I'm not sure about the fix yow dl'd but the one I did, disabling system restore was one of the main steps. Then run the fix. Make sure you then connect to windowsupdate.com or windowsupdate.microsoft.com, if you haven't already and download all the critical updates. One of them will patch your system. if you cant get on the <nobr><a class="iAs" style="border-bottom:darkgreen 1px solid;text-decoration:underline;color:darkgreen;background-color:transparent;" href="http://itxt.vibrantmedia.com/al.asp?ipid=7&cc=us&di=23209&ts=6518214&redir=http://www5.overture.com/d/sr/?xargs=02u3hs9yoaz0VvTTCDBgxf4NyznIY4b9VYglpb1LsPkFdSpJDUEG760NvvbRF8tSvzz9ta8mNm17BP2a%2Brfax5d8ZLrpCyZcGL8b1QVqv4NVrRWirtFOeQyBKRTIsgSXIrrEYGQ9TkOU8J%2BTDXPzyjyqF3%2Fz%2FxjMy87b%2Bl%2FGJfMX56Dj5vyBg1roFcxTA3QRUTKZJrXRDRp9v6W5DGn7K6nq3NLUw0jO9MofWK0%2FwVpH%2F4nKMMIsdq6NEAzgrJJS%2FHw47dzXzJITxKhVRUrFUAea3M%2Blg%3D" target="_blank" oncontextmenu="return false;" onmouseover="kwE(event,1);" onmouseout="kwL(event);" onmousemove="kwM(1);">internet</nobr>, then use your firends or other computer to download the fix from microsoft. Then copy to cd and run on infected computer.

Thanks dartx. I did in fact disable the System Restore before I ran the Symantec Fix Blast utility & MS Blaster worm patch.

I may try 1 last System Restore before attempting a full reinstall but I fear that the only thing that will remedy my problem is a complete XP Reinstall.

I called Dell & they diagnosed it as the MS Blaster worm. My system had all of the described symptoms.

I am open to suggestions,is there anything else it could be?

Disable System Restore and try to run Panda Antivirus.
