I am using firefox 1.0 and I have tried many time sto install themes and extensions but when I try to do so the window for the themes comes up, and the new theme *briefly* shows up, and then goes away. Only the default theme is left to choose. Is there some setting I'm missing? I couldn't find anything about this on the Mozilla Update page..
Can anyone help me?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox? If you do, remember to manually delete the Mozilla folder in your C:\Documents and Settings\**USERNAME**\Application Data, which perserves preferences.

You should download and use the latest version Firefox 1.0.2 from THIS link. Last week, Mozilla issued an update to the browser, version 1.02, that patched a buffer overflow in legacy Netscape code still included in the browser for animating GIF images in Firefox. Version 1.0 is a beta.
The installation guide is given HERE.

Make sure you've got FireFox set to allow software installations as well. Go to Tools>Options>Web Features, and make sure the Allow Websites To Install Software box is ticked. Then add the relevant sites to the Allowed Sites list and it should work fine.

Another way is to download the theme (usually a .jar file I think) and then use the Themer extension to install it direct from your hard drive.
