I want to move my XP installation from my old compaq to a new pc. I previously installed XP over Win98 on the compaq with no problem.

However i now want to use the upgrade version i have to move the installation to a new PC. (The old compaq is now useless.

Looking at the instructions, it appears i cannot use the quick restore cd's from compaq to prove that i had win98. Is there any other way to prove to the installation that i did have the Win 98 software?
I do not want to buy WindowsXP Again!

You might check with Compaq but I don't believe you can do the new install using an upgrade CD without a win98 disk which winXP will ask for. I also have a Compaq and the restore is nice but I would never buy another Compaq for the issues you have run into. Try borrowing an old win98 disk from one of your friends. Since you paid for it, in my mind you are doing nothing illegal.

Suzie, there should be no reason whatsoever, why the Windows XP upgrade CD should ask you to prove anything or provide the previous version of Windows' CD. It checks for system compatability and if a required Windows version is on the PC you are trying to upgrade (like either Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows ME) (not sure if it lets upgrades to NT or 2000? it may). It should not matter what was on the the other PC, under the license agreement it is a "limited usage agreement" which makes it completely leagal to uninstall and reinstall over and over again and to install onto another PC...LEGALLY!
As long as the PC you want has one of these Windows versions on it already, pop in the disc and install. Good Luck.
