Movie Maker 2 closes unexpectedly

Movie Maker 2 closes after I add an effect to a movie. It is instant with no options to save.
I have searched for this problem here on the forums and found out that it may have to do with the codec I'm running, but I don't know how to check to find out which one I have or how to fix it. Anyone have any tips to help me fix this?

It is more than likely an MPEG-4 format, which means it is either x-vid, or div-x. Downlaod both, and if you have the newest updates for Media Player 9 Series, you should have all teh present codecs necessary for the system.

I found this solution on the net and it worked for me...I'll just copy and paste what I read.
"If you've already used Movie Maker 2, then you'll appreciate just how annoying adding any transition or effect to the storyboard can be - the thing just crashes! It turns out that the single biggest reason for these crashes is a conflict with Movie Maker 2 and certain .ax file codecs, with the main culprit being the divxaf.ax codec. The way around this is to run a search for all .ax files and find this file, re-name it to divxaf.ax_, and in my case this solved the problem and now wmm2 is running great. Apparently WMM2 searches for registered codecs to run certain images and this one muscles in above the others and causes wmm2 to close, this re-naming solves all this. Another recommended tip is to download the latest version of direct x which is directx9...."
