Mouse pointer jumping

Hi,
At random times the pointer on my desktop will jump around erratically. I have no idea what causes this, I can't seem to determine a pattern such as specific programs causing the problem more frequently than others. Usually the pointer will jump from the middle of the screen (where I intend it to be) to the upper right corner or lower left corner, sometimes prompting my start menu to come up. I have checked the mouse settings under the control panel menu and they are not selected to default to close any programs. I have tried registry cleaners, virus scans and spyware programs all with no effect. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you
If you're using an optical mouse put a sheet of plain white paper underneath it and see it the problem still persists. It it's a wireless mouse change the batteries.
Also try another mouse as your mouse may be on its way out.

My optical rodent jumps around at times when my auto defrag is running in the background.

If you wake up to see the day - it can't be that bad.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that. It is an optical mouse. I will try the piece of paper idea, thanks. And I thought that it was related to some background program running as well but can't find anything to support that but thanks for the help
