A friend of mine recently got attacked by what I believe to be a RAT(remote access trojan) and now the mouse doesn't work at all. It is a Belkin USB mouse. In the device manager no info shows up for the mouse ( no mouse or pointing devices ). If you go to mouse under the control panel, no information shows up. He tried reloading the mouse drivers and that still didn't work. It appears who/whatever had access to his system changed some settings. Does anyone have any ideas about what might have gotten changed that would make the mouse not work. The pointer still shows up on the screen.....I'm clueless on this one.

in the process of trying a ps/2 mouse...I will post back to see if that works. But what settings could have gotten changed that the mouse pointer would still show up, but the mouse itself doesn't?

Well his system got back up to speed with a little help from an old ps/2 mouse (I guess the Belkin bit the dust) and AVG :)
