This has been happening for a while now;

My mouse will suddenly stop responding - you can't do anything will it and the cursor disappears. This doesn't happen all the time; usually once every few days. 95% of the time pulling the mouse out and pushing it back in and it starts working again. The other 5% of the time it won't work again until I restart the machine.

I bought a new mouse and have the same problem.

This wouldn't bother me except a few days ago the computer crashed/froze up (could only switch the machine on/off, nothing else) and I wonder if the two problems are related.

Using my recovery disk and reinstalling Windows made my laptop work normally again except for this ongoing problem with the mouse.

Other peripherals such as my MP3 player seem to work fine as normal so I don't think it's a problem with the ports.

Help??

If it's a PS2 mouse, the connection on the mother board could be bad. Have you tried a USB mouse?

When the mouse stops responding, does the keyboard still work ? Also, is this a wireless mouse ?

Is there a yellow mark in the device manager? Have you looked at the event viewer for system errors?

The mouse isn't wireless.

The keyboard still works.

No yellow mark in the device manager.

I've never checked my even viewer before and I don't know how to interpret the results. Here is what I got:

It kinda repeats like that. It has been for a few days according to the log. But I'm not sure the errors are related to the mouse not working and the computer freezing...

Since you reinstalled Windows, I'm starting to believe it's a hardware problem. Try two more things. Update the driver for the mouse, if there is a newer version and reset the BIOS to defaults.

But I have a brand new mouse as well and have experienced the same problem.

And I've never changed my BIOS settings so they should already be the default settings shouldn't they?

Maybe you should not focus on the mouse any longer. Since your computer froze, the mouse issue is probably a symptom of some other porblem-a hardware problem as Guapo suggested. I would check the following:
(1) Test the RAM using memtest.
(2) Check for overheating-particularly, the cpu temperature.
(3) Try another psu if possible unless it's still under warranty). What are the specs on your current psu ?

O.K when I tested these; my laptop had been on for 13hrs straight and my internet connection was still on - the browser wasn't open.

I ran the memtest with the following parameters;
Unused RAM (64MB) - It took less than a minute - no errors
Full 1GB RAM - took about an hour - no errors

CPU Temp = 53C (127F)

Btw, it doesn't matter ow long my machine has been on; 15 minutes or 15 hours the mouse can stop responding at any time so I don't think it's temperature related.

I don't know how to find out my PSU.

I reset my BIOS as well.

Well, back to the mouse again for a moment. Can you try a USB mouse ?

The old and the new mouse are both USB.

What about an IRQ conflict? What else is connected to the PC?

The next time it happens, hit the side of the computer with your hand in case something is loose.

Maybe a loose wire. Maybe there is a break in the printed circuit board that makes a connection sometimes.
