My mouse is freezing at random times. In games, out of games, you name it. I have a MS IntelliMouse with IntelliEye, and at times it will just turn off. The laser just stops. It's not a mouse issue because my roller mouse does the same thing when it's used. I can usually unplug it, and plug it back in and get it to work about 3 times. After that, I have to reboot using keyboard shortcuts. The movement with the mouse is also erratic at times. If I move the mouse side to side very quickly it will move up or down as well.. These lockups are incredibly frustrating, especially since I use my computer mostly for photo editing, and require the mouse. Is anyone else having this problem, and has anyone solved the issue?

Hell yeah,
I'm on XP final (2002), motherboard : MSI K7T 266Pro, with the VIA chipset. I even installed the beta VIA 4in1433 drivers, and my intellimouse explorer just keeps on freezing, being a gamer this is terrible. (Try to put it on the PS/2 port with the little adaptator included it'll resolve the problem)

But could someone help us??!? ps2 port is weak for the mouse, scrolls awfully in-game... What could be the problem with the usb?

Do your motherboards use the high point controllers? If so I would recommend you install the 1.03 drivers for them. You may find these at www.viahardware.com

Help,

Ive just found this thread with Google. I installed XP on D(elivery)day and the intellimouse hangs up on startup. If I disable the mouse then reinstall it then works alternatively if I disable before shutdown it reinstalls on startup.

Any thoughts (thanks Microsoft I thought you checked this OS before selling it)

well youre all doing better than me... :o)
Ive just installed XP as an upgrade to a working 98 system which ran the mouse fine, and now my mouse just doesnt do a damn thing anymore. Even enabling mousekeys wont move the cursor from the middle of the screen. I wouldnt mind, but its a Microsoft mouse...

Gulp... Am i embarrassed...
Following up from yesterdays rant (above) I have a confession to make. I remember for time immemorial my computer has booted with the message "legacy keyboard detected, mouse not initialised" but since the mouse always worked I didnt care. XP however wouldnt run the mouse and I discovered that the PS2 port *itself* is faulty! I just plugged in a vanilla £10 USB mouse and all is well. Somehow my old installation of WinME didnt mind the fault and ran the mouse through the faulty port anyway. So.... err... sorry M$, for once it *wasnt* your fault!

I had exactly the same problems, solved it with the new drivers from Via. The problem is that somethimes the USB got lost, this looks like youre mouse freezes. After a sec, or so XP find a new hardware device and installs your USB (and mouse) on the fly
So if you have a Via chipset get your new drivers from http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2
Via acknowledge this problem in http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kt7/faqmisc.html

Runiing a Dell Dimensision xps450. Upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP. My Microsoft Intellimouse (the optical one) freezes at random times and I have to reboot. It is installed as a USB device and worked fine under Windows 2000.
Any help appreciated. SOmetimes on reboot it detects an error and sends a report to Microsoft but these messages do not make much sense to me. It seems to me that one mentioned the video card. I have disabled any power saving features but no help.

I don't have an AMD or a VIA chipset and recieve these sames problems. So quit saying its VIA. You have to look at the Event Viewer and see whats realy causing this. In my case its "The COM+ Event System failed to fire the ConnectionMade method on subscription". I use a logitech usb mouse and I have the latest drivers for XP from logitech and it still will lock up during gamming. If you have an insight on this please post!!!

Just to add to the list, I get this problem too :( I have a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer USB mouse and it randomly stops responding under WinXP (lazer goes off and only a system reboot gets it back again). My system is an Athlon T-Bird 1.1Ghz on an Abit KT7-RAID mobo (via KT-133 chipset) with the latest BIOS and Highpoint IDE drivers.

The problem happened with the standard WinXP mouse driver and still occurs with the latest Intellimouse 4 XP drivers from Microsoft. It's the only USB device I have, and worked fine on Win98. It's a shame as otherwise WinXP is a great OS, but this is really bugging me.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know - cheers :)

My problem occurs when I try to mark some files in a folder with my mouse. It 'lags'(?) very much when I do that. Where is the problem?! It's a new harddrive and new memory, motherboard and processor. Is it maybe as simple as a irq-conflict?! Any ideas?!

I am experiencing this problem as well. I am using a MS Wheelmouse Optical USB, on an Intel chipset Asus CUSL2 Mbd.

One thing I can tell you, from what I have seen here, on the web, and in news groups, this is a /very/ common problem.

One thing of note, putting my system in "stand by" mode, and then resuming gets the mouse back.

I Have the same problem. My mouse behaves erratically and sometimes freezes up. This happens quite often. I have a Tyan Tiger 2X 2X Athlon XP 1900+ This system is Tri-Booting Win98SE/Win 2000 Pro/Win XP Pro It only occurs on Win XP So it is apparent that the fault lies with Win XP. I have tried the default drivers as well as the Logitech drivers. I have also tried disabling "fast initialization", increasing the input buffer, increasing the sample rate in the mouse properties dialog box. The event manager reports the following messages : Could not set mouse sample rate, Could not set mouse resolution, Trying to determine the number of mouse buttons. These messages are randomly identified as the problem. When sending the info to Microsofts support page it says no info is available for this error. I believe there is a setting in the registry to change the timing but I don't know how to do this- Anyone?

Until I installed WebFerret, I couldn't find a single web site that dealt with the mouse freeze problem. Everyone I mentioned it to, look at me like I was just imagining the whole thing. Thanks people! I'll try some of the remedies mentioned here. I've upgraded from Me to XP three times now. Once I even did a full reformat. The same problem. Thanks again!

I got the god damn same problem too. My system is an athlon xp 1800+ on a ECS K7VTA3 mobo (Apollo KT266 (VT8366 + VT8233)). No matter what device I put on the USB ports, they all will disconnect after a while. I'm checking some drivers at www.viahardware.com and see how it goes, cause all i've tried so far doesn't work at all, i've made TONS of changes in the bios, and I still get the same problems. I changed my mouse to the PS/2 port, but I also have a printer which is USB, so I'm back to the same problem again. I'll let you know how it goes after I install these drivers. If anyone has an idea how to fix this, PLEASE TELL US!. Thanks.

Ok, I think I fixed this. These are the changes I made before booting:

1.- On Windows XP, on Device Manager, Via Rev 5 or Later USB Universal Host Controller, Advanced I marked the option "Don't tell me about USB errors"

2.- Also on the Device Manager, but on all instances of USB Root Hub, Power Manegement tab, I removed the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

3.- After shuting down, I removed two devices that were plugged on the 4th and 5th PCI slots, I read in the avi website that they share IRQ's with the USB. Those were a modem, and a LAN card, i'm not using either of them, so I removed them. I might plug them back, but on slot 1 and 3.

4.- After all that headache, I went to the BIOS and activated the IRQ on USB (I had it disabled before, expecting it would get fixed that way).

That's all. Ohhh, also, I assured that my sound card (a Sound Blaster PCI 512) was plugged on the 2nd PCI slot, as I read that this one doesn't share IRQs with anything. I did this due I read on another site that the SB Live cards had conflicts with the VIA Chipsets.

All these seems to have worked so far, but I don't think I can claim victory yet, as the first time I booted, the box shutted down itself without even asking while doing some tests on my scanner ... quite odd. I've been doing a few more tests for like 30 mins, no problems so far, but I'm still not completly sure it's working perfectly.

I'll come back whenever I find more info, or if after 2 or 3 days i've not had any problems with the current configuration. If you don't hear from me after that lapse of time, it might mean I succedeed to fix it. Hope you guys find the way to fix it as well.

I thought i was the only one.

I got my AMD1400 machine new before christmas and it has always had this fault!
I am running a 2002 version of XP and yet the mouse will freeze no matter what application i am in, whether it be word, games, etc. It can work for 2 hours, or 2 seconds. There are times when i cant even get into the start-up.
I've tried 6 different mice and the same thing happens, even thought it might be the keyboard at one point.
All i can do is hit the restart button on the machine. Some times when it "freezes" it shows a blcak and white box (like the pattern on an old B&W TV with poor reception) the same size of a desktop icon, I'm wondering if it could be a graphics thing??

Well, I hate to add to this sorry list but I have the same promblem. The only solution I could come up with for the msi kt266 board and chipset I have been using is to get rid of the mouse. I though that this was just a problem with the drivers and such. nope, maybe the usb connectors? So i used my little green usb to ps/2 port adapter and does it work consistenly? a resounding NO.

By now I am sure its a hardware motherboard thing. That particular chipset likes to raise hell with usb devices. I may be completly wrong, and if I am I would love to hear about it.

Dear Guillermo Lombardi,

I just read you had a K7VTA3 mobo and running XP on it? Please tell me what version of that mobo it is and if you encountered any problems installing XP.
Because I spent a whole weekend trying to setup XP on my K7VTA3/Duron 1000.

Thanks
