Hi everyone,

I started having a problem after trying to install Roxio software for my cd writer.

After startup my mouse freezes after a few seconds and I can't do much. Sometimes the keyboard also freezes. When I try to type also what I want to type doesn't come out and jiberish comes out.

This is really annoying. Can anyone please help me?

If a virus infection is unlikely (PCs with Excellent Anti-virus protection with current Virus definitions)logical firs steps involve :
1. Making sure Port transposition did not occur if this followed any hardware install inside the PC and both devices are PS/2.

2. If the devices work in Safe Mode, Uninstall of Roxio Software through Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs in Safe Mode and checking devices after reboot.

3. If that is not feasible or failing> System Restore.

4. If that Fails > Using Windows XP CD> Install ..>Repair unless very familiar with Use of Console and in that case Repair.

5. If that fails Reformat and Reinstall

Is it a cordless keyboard and mouse? If they have batteries replace them and or reset the buttons. If the mouse has a roller ball remove it and clean it out. I would uninstall Roxio as it may be a factor. I'd make sure you have all the microsoft critical updates and up2date anti-virus and anti-spyware --- scan your PC.

It's a PS2 mouse connection, not cordless. The keyboard is working fine now, but the mouse is still frozen.

Roller ball is clean. I uninstalled Roxio. Have all the Microsoft updates. Have up to date anti-virus. Scanned pc with it and nothing was found. Scanned pc with AdAware, nothing found. Scanned pc with SpyBot and it found BackWeb Lite. I got rid of that and still no luck.

I'm running ScanDisk now and when it's done I'm going to set the Bios (F1) to enable PS2 mouse and see if that's it.

Could it be Internet Explorer? How do I use the IE Repair tool? Where do I find it?

Internet Explorer is bundled with WinXP and there us no IE Repair tool like the Win98/ME in the later Windows.

I doubt IE is directly involved in mouse freeze.

If this an HP mouse, they may have proprietary drivers installed which might have got corrupted.

If your BIOS troubleshoot fails, try removing the mouse from Device Manager and using the Keyboard which you said is now available in Windows (you did not tell us how you managed to get it working again :-). close the Device Manager & system Properties Windows and Restart the PC for PC to reinstall the mouse driver.

After I ran the ScanDisk and set the BIOS to ENABLE the PS2 mouse it started working fine again.

When I changed the BIOS setting it was set to something like detect automatically.

I don't know why it wasn't working though because it was working fine yesterday with the detect automatically selection. Or could it be possible that before I deleted BackWeb Lite it gave a hacker a chance to mess with the BIOS settings? I would think they would do something more malicious than that, no?

I spoke too soon. The mouse was working for like 5 minutes. Then froze again.

I reinstalled the drivers earlier today and that didn't help.

This is pissing me off lol

Try removing the mouse software (uninstall it)...Windows drivers will work amouse anyway and maybe there is a conflict with some other program...I'll just bet Roxio didn't totally uninstall and there arte remnants left in the rgistry. I use a program called jv16 Power Tools to get rid of those entries after an uninstall.

With the current information, I am more convinced that there has been a lot of Registry corruption as I suspected from the very beginning. I suspected it was from the Software Install as I presumed you have current Antivirus/Antispyware/Fire wall and other defences against mischief makers.
Did you try System Restore yet?
One subtle point to keep in mind; whatever mischief the vernmin might have done to your System before it was chased away, the System Restore file- well intentioned saviour- becomes a curse by giving the vermin sanctuary and let it return to haunt us!

My personal experience with many of those RegCleaners is that they're are often a waste of time if freeware and money too in those Paid "Pro versions" I'd tried in the very remote past! I stopped trying them any longer and would defer to others who use them successfully for comments including whether it is worth a try in your current predicament.

I often do manual Regedit if I know it is going to be simple and won't take a whole lot of my time.

In the above case where a lot of variabes are unknown, my next step would be Windows Repair as said earlier in my Respons #1 step 4 and I have run out of options between Repair and Reinstall.

One other thought hit me and having reread this thread I can't see where you uninstalled Roxio either, but Roxio usually placed a number of unnecessary entries in startup, the only one necessary I believe is Direct CD. You could go Run, msconfig, startup, ok and uncheck all the Roxio entries, which could be conflicting with mouse software...reboot and see if that does it.

It started working again last night. After I set up a screen saver and used JV Power Tools. Go figure.

Thanks for all your help people, I really do appreciate your time.

If it happens again I guess I will try and repair windows and if that doesn't work HP will be giving me a new pc LOL

Thanks again!

Thank you for your feed back. I'm glad the Registry cleaner did clean up the errors. Good for you:-)
Is JV Power Tools a Freeware or Commercial software? If it is a paid Application, how much does it cost?

Jv16 Power tools is a great program...have used it for years. Originally done by a grad student in Finland or Sweden as a free resource it is now for sale @ www.jv16.org. I am sure there is a trial version and it is about $25-29 with a ton of useful programs that were never in the free version.
My forum heavily uses this and recommends it.
I use mainly the front screen which shows the program reference points in the registry to aid with uninstalls. Many use the registry cleaner, but that thought scares me.

Well, looks like it's infected again.

Worked so well for a few hours and then started again this afternoon.

I did a sytem restore for Windows XP and it's application files, but no luck and now it doesn't even load my network connection so I can't get it on the internet anymore.

Like I said b4 I scanned with Norton and it found nothing. SpyBot only found BackWeb Lite and deleted it. AdAware finds nothing. I have SpywareBlaster as well.

Do you think maybe it's a Trojan being that it works fine for hours at a time during the night and the early morning?

I had cautioned about System Restore being a sanctuary if the problem was an infection and ineffectiveness of the so-called Resistry- Doctors in general for their high price and low performance! I wished you backed up imporatant personal files during the small window of opportunity in which case Reformat and Reinstall could have been a curative therapy for the file damage from infection or from an otherwise inoccuous program like Roxio.

Whatever way you find a definitive cure that lasts longer than 48 hrs, please let us know so we can all learn from this bizzare problem and its troubleshoot.

I think the problem had to do with NEWDOTNET.COM. The PC with the primary internet connection was infected with it. HijackThis got rid of it.

My PC had a couple of problems as well. Something like dcsearch or something like that. HijackThis got rid of it.

Everything seemed fine for a little while, but my PC started having the same problems again.

The PC with the primary internet connection has been fine through all of this, just my PC has been acting screwy.

Now neither PC can see each other on the network and my Netgear WG311 Network Adapter doesn't load on startup on my PC and there is no option in MSCONFIG to do so either.

SHould I post the Event Viewer logs here, they are very very very long?

As many of us have said more than once here, removing anything without shutting down the System Restore is scratching the itch!!!!
You probably had it fixed, so you need to shut the SYSTEM RESTORE OFF, AND THEN DO ALL OF WHAT YOU DID ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!!!

Unless you use the ultimate weapon (Reformat & Reinstall) now and be on your homenetwork [another new piece of information for us:-)]you will win some battles against these critters but eventually lose the war as your paientce will wear thin and you might make some silly mistakes in one or the other of the steps and then eventually end up doing the Reformat after all these frustrations!

maadhurimn,
You are right, I just didn't want to say it and get "jumped" by 13 "reformat to avoid death only" that lurk out here on these forums.
The sheer waste of time trouble shooting and the resulting potential "brain damage" from failure is not worth it.
For myself I have a 20 minute rule. I spend up to 20 minutes trouble shooting anything, and after that restore to last week with either Acronis or Ghost, my trusty companion now for about 6 years. I make an image file every week, eventually save one a month and also use a data and file backup program that I update just before taking the plunge backwards.

Rich Mentzel,

I agree. After a reasonable trial of troubleshoot based on the analysed set of information about the problem as well as the Hardware/Software milieu of the Computer(s) and the Peripherals involved, when one starts to see diminishing returns from a long troubleshoot, one has to consider an all out assault on the defying problem even when there could be a potential loss of personal data in that process .

I too use Ghsoting as an insurance against catastrophic loss of data and to save time in restoration of the entire system. Falling prices of Double- Layer DVD Burners and Discs have made storage a little more affordable and convenient.

maadhurimn,
I should have mentioned I do it with a second internal hard drive and external 1394 drives as well. I just have not made the move into dvd burning yet, though I am looking.I suspect I will start with a Plextor external drive soon as I keep watching them on ebay.
Cdrw's obnoxious corruption and slow speed, keep me away as I see the dvd speeds are as slow.Making an image file of 12 gb in 10-15 minutes is too hard to change from. And even better restoring in 8 minutes is "bliss".
I have had so many bad experiences with cdrw's, I guess to I doubt I will ever really trust that media or anything similar.
