After the clean xp install my mouse is freezing up for about 2 seconds every 30-60 minutes. It's a microsoft optical. When I'm in a program I can hear a ding dong like it's disengageing and re-engageing.??

hi, just 2 things,check for the drivers,uninstall and reinstall,next is check for the screensave whichever you would have selected,select to none and check the result.

if its usb check your connection. that ding sounds like the connection wizzard on XP detecting new hardware. If your cable is loose it can do that..

My optical wheel-mouse does also do the same, and all I can tell you is that it isn't any problem with the mouse itself. I have managed to work around the stupid sound though by connecting it to the PS/2 port instead (with an optional USB > PS/2 connector) and with this I also gained a better refresh rate on the mouse cursor I might ad. Pretty sure it's a driver thing though.
