My problem is that the mouse freezes up for about 2/3 seconds, and then a ding dong sound is heard and then I can continue using the computer as before. I have an usb optical wheel mouse. I reinstalled the drivers and plugged the mouse in other usb port, but it's still freezing. I disconnected the mouse manually and then connected back, and the ding dong is because xp is detecting new hardware.
I don't think that the mouse is malfunctioning, it may be a virus or something like it, that is only annoying me, but I'm not sure. I run NAV 2003 several times, but it detects nothing. I don't know what to do, any suggestions ??? Thanks in advance !!!

you should note which IRQ's are assigned to your USB ports. You could have an IRQ conflict, which means that you need to manually assign one. Look at your start-->programs-->accessories-->system tools-->system information and look at the IRQ listings to see if the USB share and IRQ with another device. Make sure that it is on a seperate IRQ, then it might work. If you are not familiar with these changes, go into your BIOS settings and switch the plug and play OS to "on" and it will automatically assign IRQ's. If this does not work, let me know again.....

You could also try this and see if it helps any...

USB Device Stops Working or Won't Resume
WinXP by Default turns off USB Root Hubs to Conserve Power causing some devices not to resume correctly after Windows resumes from sleep, hibernation or computer inactivity

In the Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers > USB Root Hub > Power Management, Uncheck the box "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" below. Uncheck all boxes on all root hubs.
