I recently had an issue with my DVD-ROM not being able to read DVDs. I went to Microsoft's support site and was told to delete a couple of registry entries and restart. Ican tell it now reads DVDs thanks to the autorun, but my wireless keyboard and mouse stopped working.
I attempted to plug it into different USB ports. The hardware wizard installed them with no errors, but they still don't work. I have tried a wired USB mouse and keyboard with no luck. I then tried a PS2 keyboard...nothing. They all receive power. I can use it fine in the BIOS or any of the startup menus.
I tried safe mode, but it still doesn't work. Does anyone know anything that I can try other than reloading windows?

If you remember what keys you deleted, you may be able to export them from another machine in a .reg file. Burn the file to a CD and import it to your machine. You may even be able to do it using remote access from another PC on the LAN.

I cannot connect remotely using remote desktop or dameware. I believe I disabled that service on my computer earlier. How can I import registry entries without mouse or keyboard?

You said that autorun works on the DVD drive.

Burn a .bat file consisting of
regedit /s FileName.reg

along with the .reg file and see if autorun makes it happen.

Or look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/arc...

Ok, I found the reg entries and burned the CD, but it just opens the folder on autorun...how can I get it to import the entries? I'm thinking a bootable disk should work, but I don't know how to make one that modifies the registry. Do you know how to do it Guapo?

Ok, I used ERD commander to get into the registry and reverted the changes. I restarted the computer and it works great! Unfortunately, the DVD-RW is broke again...

Thanks for the help, Guapo.

Now go to the device manager. Are there any yellow or red marks next to the DVD? What registry keys did you delete the first time? maybe they can be modified instead of deleted.

All the devices are installed fine. Drivers are all updated, DVD-RW reads CDs fine, and can burn CD-Rs and CD-RWs fine but not DVD-Rs. It just has a problem reading DVD-ROMs. Someone else found out that if I just restart it a couple times, it'll read them for an hour or so. It's not too big of a problem as my PC has another DVD-ROM (not -RW) that I salvaged from an older (prebuilt) PC.

Read post #17. It really is written for Vista but see what you think.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Was that the site ^^ that suggested the registry changes?

Ok, that seems to have fixed it. It's reading and burning DVDs fine (for now, at least).

The registry changes from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
is what I did before that disabled my keyboard and mouse. I still don't know how modifying the DVD registry disabled my keyboard and mouse, but I just won't touch it again.

Ok, don't breathe on it too hard. I'm glad to hear it's working.
