Hard to say, not knowing the exact error message. I do know that PC chips mainboards are considered to be junk.

Chances are you have virus protection turned on in the motherboard BIOS. Read your manual.

Otherwise, post back with the real error.

You can use the XP setup disks. XP setup Disks

Have you partitioned and formatted the Hard drive?

You may need to use a 98 bootdisk and fdisk the drive and format it with that.

No. It's not the Processor. If the processor was bad. You would be able to get a POST.

*correction* "You would be able to get a POST"

Should read: "You wouldn't be able to get a POST."

Hey, Dave02, I know that the PC Chips MB's are reported to be junk, But I am using one right now, running XP Pro with SP2 installed, and have had none of these problems. My original problem was a bad CPU that came presinstalled on the MB and was supposedly working (yeah, right).

We don't know the model number of his MB so we don't know whether it will handle a 3 Ghz cpu. (Mine won't) We definitely need some more information, as well as the EXACT error message. Generalizations won't cut it here.

Let us know more, jermey.

Turn off auto restart for errors.

Right click My Computer/ choose properties/Click the advanced tab/ Under "Startup and Recovery" heading click the settings button. Then remove the tick by automatically restart. Then ok and apply out of that. The next time you get an error. You will get a BSOD. Post the error code and any drivers it flags in this forumn. Also check Device Manager for any conflicts. Be real specific when posting back about whatever errors you recieve. It helps to diagnose the problem easier.

The only way to know for sure is to take the chip to a local shop and have it tested or put the Processor in a motherboard that supports it and see what happens.

jermey;
Indeed you may have processor probs. Most MB's have an option to turn off the L1-L2 internal cache(s).I have had similar troubles. Try turning off your cache(s) in BIOS and reboot.Be warned, this will greatly reduce the speed of your PC. However, if the BSOD cease, therein lies your problem. This is not a common trouble spot, but one that is difficult to diagnose,as everything points elsewhere.
HTH and good luck!

I have had this same problem with a Soyo K7VME Socket A board. I tried everything in my power to install XP with this system, including updating BIOS, checked BIOS settings, reseating the CPU (ensuring the thermal paste is applied), checked/swapped ram, removed all hardware and re-installed all hardware..etc.
SO.....
I decided to take out the hard drive and install XP on a different system.
I then swapped the drive back to the "problem system" with the Soyo and it worked perfectly...no crashes or errors (after the inital swap/install).
I built several of these systems and I had that problem with only one of the motherboards. I hope this helps!
