I have another question. Is it ok to have more than one anti-spyware, anti-virus software on the computer at the same time. An IT guy at work said it wasn't a good idea and wanted someone else's input on this.
Thanks
Lucia

You can Install as many as you want - but - just don't have more than one actually Running in the background
Decide which is your main one and let that Run in the background
Then - periodically - if you wish - Close the main one and Run the other one
There is no need to have more than two of either Anti-virus or Anti-spyware
Many people are happy with just one of each
The important thing is to never have more than one of each sort Running at the same time

Anti-virus softwares don't always play well together. I use AdawareSE and Spybot S&D 1.4 together, with no problems. You just need to read the screens during installation. If I understand your question correctly you mean having more than one installed simultaneously, not actually running more than one at the same time.

Use only 1 Antivirus. Use as many Spyware/Adware programs as you want as long as there not spyware. Alot of people are fooled when they see an ad that saids " Your computer may have errors" DO NOT CLICK THOSE OR YOU WILL HAVE ERRORS. Also there are Spyware programs that are spyware so be careful.
What do i put here if i don't put a question?

Thanks Leslie, OtheHill, and CHKDSK!
And yes, othehill, I did mean installed but not running at the same time. I ran Norton last night and it checks for viruses, spyware, etc. and it didn't find anything and today I downloaded advanced spyware remover that I got from majorgeeks.com and it found about 30 infections. I couldn't believe that Norton didn't detect anything and my computer is still acting up. So aggravating. But thanks you three for your posts.
Take care!
Lucia

Virus & spyware are two different things. Norton AV does not scan for spywares other than viruse.

I third the motion. Multiple anti-spyware / adware prgms are OK. Most anti VIRUS developers say right off that you should not have > 1 installed, much less run at same time. Doing so can turn into BIG probs when one or other craps out, and you have to try uninstalling both, sometimes manually.
Generally, for AV, many experienced users (and myself) suggest getting the PREVIOUS AV prgm's "uninstall" or "cleanup" utility from the mfg's site, and run that before installing a new AV. Also, look on the new AV mfg's site for help on uninstalling the old (specific)AV. It's extra work, but in the long run can save a LOT of time.

You'd probably see a huge performance boost if you dumped Norton and replaced it with almost anything else (not McAfee, another resource hog). There are many AV softwares that perform as well as (or better than) Norton, but without draining your resources. Of course, removing all traces of Norton can be another nightmare all together.
Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

For the spywares - download, install, update & run...
Pay attention to the found files you choose to delete.
