Hello:
I was wondering if there are any free programs that will make Windows XP more secure (by way of removing viruses, spyware, putting up firewalls, removing security holes, and what not)?
I am already using Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition, SpyBot Search & Destroy, and SpywareBlaster.
Thanks

As far as real time protection a good spyware deterent is Microsoft's AntiSpyware which is free.
However for virus protection I recommend paying the yearly fee and getting the best protection available. (McAfee, Symantec, or Network Associates)
Windows XP SP2 is fairly secure as long as you keep it up to date with the latest patches. If you are a basic home user this should be sufficient if configured properly.

For a firewalls there is Sygate Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm.
For anti-virus there is AVG and Avast.
All free and well recommended. Search Google to find them.

having more of the same kind of app doesn't protect you more but does slow your computer down due to the bloat. keep that in mind with your zeal for free software.
Golly gee wilerkers everyone. Learn to Internet Search

Sue The problems you refer to in ZoneAlarm is for the Security Suite. The free firewall only version is still available. I use this regularly and it seems to work well but I would not recommend the Security Suite. In any event the original poster was looking for free software.

Hi, These are the things I have running on my computer. All free and up to now have prevented anything coming in. I run Antivir Personal Edition, Sygate Personal Firewall, Microsofts Antispyware and Lavasoft Ad-Aware and not forgetting Windows updates. I check for updates regularly and run scans regularly. I also use Preventon Scan online and Nortons online to ask them to try to get past my defences and up to now my security has not been compromised.

Thanks for the info guys!

One of the reasons why I wanted to get more security is that some of these programs miss things that others will catch (I noticed that after running Ad-aware scans, I would run SpyBot and it would find other things). So, I'm wondering if I could get another program and see if it will catch yet other things (regarding wanderer's comment).
