On this machine the Add or Remove Programs indicated that I have already applied 93 bandages (critical updates) to Windows XP. Tomorrow there will be 6 more coming. Does anyone know for sure how many more it can take before the OS begin to burst at the seams?

It boggles my mind that there are so many (critical?) problems that they have to fix.

I forgot to say that the 93 bandages are POST XP SP2. There are more critical updates for the WMCE components as well as WGA. It also is blogging my mind too.

Wait until Vista's first service pack, due in October. I'm sure there will be hundreds of updates before and after judging from the number of reported bugs.

At least with XP most of the major bugs are behind us! (Then I woke up) :)

October may be too long ..... word on the street is that Vista's SP1 will be released to the wild in a week, but do not hold your breath.

A graphic representation of XP with all the bandages would probably resemble the Michelin Man.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

We shall see, but as XPUser said they would be "Critical" updates then they are to plug security holes rather than improve performance.

EDIT
Well, "Security" then in various grades (see below) but not to improve general performance.

Patch menu for today (More details HERE):

3 Critical
2 Important
1 Moderate

I like to synonymize all monthly patches as "critical" updates just to keep my thinking simple. If it's really important for me to differentiate then it's more work for me and higher charge for my clients.

The Vista SP1 is not a true release, it is only a BETA vesion for testers to try and users that want to see if it helps them. The official release is still listed as coming out in October. As for XP ones just consider how many there were for W98, ME, NT4 and W2000. If your system bursts then run a recovery and you will have to do the 100 or so patches again hoping that you don't overfill the system.

Good luck

Richard

Of course we all know what Beta is. The thing I'm not sure about is your mentioning October 2007 as the date for the official SP2 RTM. Where did you hear/read about it? BTW today update has 7 patches for Vista alone.

Hmmm ..... I had checked earlier today & there wasn't anything new for Vista.

However, after reading the above - I went ahead & tried Windows update again. Now there's a total of 11 updates -- the first six (three important & three recommended) for Vista & the last five (important) were for Office 2007. I probably don't need them all, but I sure grabbed them all .... LOL

On my XP Home they turned out to be a bit of a damp squib.

Two were for Net Framework web development which I don't use and one of these didn't take anyhow because I hadn't got Net Framework version 2.0 onboard.

The other two were regular updates to the Malicious software removal tool and Windows Defender.

No general Windows updates so none were recorded by Qfecheck.
