I got a problem with my sound. When I open volume control "mono out" is disabled and the volume icon does not appear on the taskbar even though I ticked the box so it would be place on the taskbar. I tried re-installing the audio driver "SoundMax digital" from the CD which came with my motherboard but the mono out is still disabled. My motherboard is the ASUS A7V400-MX SE. I can't even record sounds on my computer. Can someone please help me with this problem?

Have you checked your "LINE IN/MICROPHONE"?
I've never seen a soundcard with a "mono out". Most cards have a Line in/mic in and typcally on two diffrent ports (they're not called ports but for all intents and purposes it sorta fits). The line in is used to play sounds from devices usually not on your computer like a tape player. I think the only device which actually resides on your computer that may use the line in is a tv-card. To record external sounds you'd have to use a mic and hence the mic-in OR microphone. Fair warning xp isn't fairly equipped to do long recordings. There are far better freeware/shareware apps that do it and do it a whole lot better.
In the dialog where you say you ticked the mono out box there should be one for line in and another for microphone, tick those. To record sounds make sure the mic/line in isn't muted and you should be able to record "external sounds".
Another thing that would be helpful is letting us know what it is your're trying to record. I could be that someone has already been nice enough to do it for you and all you have to do is download it.
Truth can become lie, but if lies become truth we're in trouble.

I did everything you said, but the mono out is still disabled and I still can't record sounds. The other problem that the mono out is causing is that whenever I log into my computer I can't hear the log-in sounds and whenever I play a flash video clips there's no sounds, and whenever i try using winamp to play music the following error message appears: "A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system". So please can someone help me with this problem.
