Comment:

I have installed Win XP Professional on two different systems. One system is a Pentium 400mhz and the other is a Pentium 366 Mhz. The intial load goes well but on the first reboot of the install the monitor won't wake back up. The monitor is an old 14inch Emachine monitor that I use at home when I am working on people's PCs. When I switch to a larger monitor, the screen immediately comes on. Is there an issue with XP Pro and older, smaller monitors? Thanks for the information. Want to solve problem before I do upgrades for anyone else.

It's most likely your monitor. Might also be your graphic card, but I doubt it. You have an emachine, remember?

The indicator light on the monitor can tell you what the problem is.
I have heard that if the light is green, then you are getting a signal from the computer.
If it is yellow, then may be a cable or video card problem where no signal is getting to the monitor.

Older monitors on newer Operating Systems will have problems. XP is very particular about which
drivers it uses.

The monitor on one is an emachine monitor only and the monitor on the other is a packard bell. They are attached to a Gateway CPU and a HP CPU respectively.

Yep, it seems to be a refresh rate problem due to the old monitor because when we attach a large newer monitor it comes right on. The older monitors don't support the refresh rate that XP is trying to use.

tks
