Windows XP, Dell Monitor, Compaq Presario 2.5 GHz, Intel Celeron, 128mb ram.

Daughter tried to change the resolution and the monitor now says,

INFORMATION

MONITOR IS WORKING

OUT OF SCAN RANGE
CHANGE PC SETTING

We've tried turning the monitor off/on, did nothing. Same message.

We've turned off/on the PC, did nothing. Same message.

Anyone know how we can reset this thing?
I'm pretty PC illiterate, so speak slowly and use small words. LOL!

Thanks!

Hey
Boot up the computer and while it is booting keep tapping on the F5 key,
This will boot you into Safe Mode.(Where the monitor should work).
Then click on Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/Settings. Set it to 640x480 and reboot.
Everything should be back to normal

Turn pc off.

Unplug the power cord from back of monitor.

Hold down the on button for two minutes.

Plug the monitor power cord back in.

Reboot the computer to safe mode.

Usually tap the F8 key while booting select safe mode.

Go into the display settings and change the refresh rate back to normal.

settings in Display Properties are not supported by the installed video card this is what causes this error.

Start, then Settings, then Control Panel. When the Control Panel opens, double-click the Display icon. The Display Properties screen will open. On that screen, click the Settings tab. When the Settings tab opens, click the "Advanced" button at the lower right. The video card properties window will open. Click the Adapter tab of this window. When it opens, there is a window below the center of the screen which shows the refresh rate currently selected. Click the arrow at the right end of this display to show a drop down menu of refresh rates to choose from

No Offence BUT
If Robbie Dixon reads this again, please tell me why you need to unplug and then hold down the button for 2 minutes.
It takes 1\30th of a second to break ALL electrical connections on a computer.

I work for a very large computer tech company that does all the tech support for gateway, comcast, and all the computers sold at bestbuy, ie: hp,sony, matrix, etc

And that is how they trained me and it does work because i have helped a lot of people.

Restores ones faith in tech support ;)

I think what Robbie means is that when the cord is unplugged & you keep the button pressed the system drains all the energy it has stored in it's components. Your PC can hold energy for up to several hours, that means what ever is in your ram can stay there for that ammount of time. I have had a few shocks from TV's & sound equipment cos of this energy staying trapped.
