Specs: Windows XP
>My monitor is going into stand by every few minutes. If I I shuffle the mouse the Windows screen returns and on clicking "user" I return to what I was doing - no loss of work

Control Panel,
then click Performance and Maintainance,
then click Power Options,
then set anything you want, on any tab.

Or Power Options can be opened with
Start, then RUN, then type
powercfg.cpl

I've tried your suggestion and still have the same problem. What else could I do. It doesn't happen when I'm in Word on seems to be when I'm on line.

Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

Spyware includes ----
Adware, Dialers, Browser Hijackers, Trojans, Cookies,
Key Loggers, Trackware, and other Malware while browsing the internet.

Also,
check to see that the Screen Saver time is not too low. That is on the Screen Saver tab in Display Properties.
Do Start, then RUN then type
desk.cpl

It's set for 10mins - is that ok.

I don't have spyware, should I ?

This has just happened - instead of monitor going into standby the menu came up for me to select either, standby reset or off. It didn't cut me off at first, BUT now it just has gone into "preparing to standby" followed by "going to sleep"
