Sounds like a hardware issue related to your video card or you are overheating.

but start with making sure your system is clean and maintained.

run chkdsk /r
update and run your antivirus/malware/spyware checkers
run disk cleanup
run defragmenter

I had a similar problem about a month back. The monitor would go black randomly but would come right on a restart. It appeared to be a heat-related problem. Here is what fixed my problem:
Removed and cleaned video adapter card and fan with soft bristle paint brush and vacuum. Re-installed card making sure it clicked firmly into place.
Removed cpu fan and gave it same treatment. While it was removed I gave the cpu heat sink a good brush and vacuuming, making sure ALL dust had been removed. You should be able to do this without removing the heat sink.
While I was on the job I removed, cleaned and re-installed the power supply fan assembly. I have had no problems with black screen since
Good luck.

Don't use a vacuum or brush. Static electricity would make your card good only for a paperweight. Best to use a can of compressed air.
