This is really puzzling me. I never shut down my PC, when lately I noticed that my monitor goes black on random. Thinking it might have gone into standby ( I DON'T use standby or Hibernate) I try moving the cursor or tapping keys on my keyboard to no avail. I can see that the monitor switch is on and also the switch on the tower. The only way I can get my monitor working is by holding the on/off switch for several seconds and then the PC shuts down. Then I restart my PC. Anyone know a solution for this?
Thanks
SallyG

I'm new and I'm willing to learn and I'll give you advice when it's my turn

Try another graphics card in there for a while, maybe your current one is giving up. Good luck :^)

I suspect it is going into sleep mode.

Try tapping the power switch (do not hold it in, just a firm push and release) that usually wakes it up.

Another way of waking it up is by pressing the "Alt" and "Tab" keys together.

I assume you tried to move the mouse or press the "Enter" key on the keyboard? as that also sometimes works.

Final one to try is go into:
Start > Control Panel and Select Power Management
Change Power schemes: to be "always on" and
Change System Standby: to never.

As far as the graphics card, I think mine is integrated into my board. Also mosaddique,
I changed the setting in my Power management and I'll see how that works out.
Thanks, I'll post back if all is ok.

Thinking about it, I had a PC awhile back that used to hang if it went into sleep - there was a key on my keyboard I'd occassionaly press by accident. Almost as bad as that "windows" key when I'm playing games, lol.

The thing is, if you read my post at the beginning you can see I don't have anything set to put my PC into sleep or hibernation. That's what's puzzling me. I tried mosaddique's advice by turning my Power schemes to be always on....I had them turned off for almost 2 years. Now, when the monitor goes black I can hit any key on the keyboard and it takes a few seconds, but my monitor comes back on? Strange that this should start after 2 years? Anyone else have any idea as to why my PC goes to sleep?

Did you change any BIOS settings?

Did you add any new hardware?

Usually it is one off these that cause these kind of changes.

I believe it is something to do with ACPI compatibility.

Look here for more information or google for ACPI.

The only new thing I installed was an optical mouse as my other mouse was sticking all the time even after I cleaned it.
