Monitor dark

OS: Windows XP Pro SP1
CPU/Ram: 930Mhz/128MB

I have a Compaq Presario MV400 monitor and recently the screen got really dark the contrast and brightness are all the way up. And the proper drivers are installed. I formatted and everything and it was still dark. I checked all the cables and none are loose. Does anyone know how to fix it or if there is a way. Thanks.
