The maximum speed of a 52Kbps (kilo bits per second) modem is would you believe 56 Kbps. However, that is only a theoretical maximum that could only ever be achieved under ideal circimstamces which hardly ever exist.

A more noraml speed would range between 42 and 50 Kbps. The actual speed achieved will depend on line quality, how for you are from the telephone exchange and how many times your telphone line has been repaired. The actual speed will be negotiated between your modem and the other modem when you log on. Thats what all the squeeks, whistles and bleeps are when you first fial up a remote system.

The number 921600 looks like the port speed, the speed between your serial interface and the modem. This has no effect on the speed of the modem. In fact if the speed is set to high it could have an adverse effect on the modem speed. 115200 is plenty high enough.

I have a 56k modem and my average speed is 46.6kbps, the highest I have ever had is 48
I agree with Stuart 115200 is plenty high enough, set it any higher and you will likely have problems

What depends on your server?

If you mean modem speed then no. Its entirely down to line quality. All ISPs have 56K capabilty now. When 56K first came out, some ISP might have been slow in installing the necessary euipment, but that was years ago.
