I was just wondering if there is any way to get a download speed of 50kbps with my dial up modem. At times i get downloads at up to 50 but it only lasts for a couple seconds and then goes down to about 5. So i just wanted to know if there is anyway to tweak the modem to get the maximum download speed all the time.

If you are getting anything near 50K you are doing well. Most people have to contend with 45K and some considerbly less.
Its all down to line quality. What is happening is that you are getting to many errors at 50K and the modems automatic fallback is clicking in to a slightly slower but more reliable speed.

Stuart. I don't think you read the question correctly. The reference was to download speed, not connection speed. On a dial up connection, I have seldom seen download speeds much above five; mine are usually 4 or sometimes even less. This is with a connection speed of 40 or thereabouts. I would say the download speed mentioned is normal. Sometimes, when a down load starts, it will briefly show a much higher speed, but it won't last. I think everything in the subject system is normal.
