Hello:

I'm hoping someone here can help as I am not familiar with XP. I generally run Solaris and am stumped on this one.

Problem seems to be a modem port conflict.

Specs:

Compaq Presario 1200 Laptop
13" TFT display
AMD K-6 III 500, 128 MB SDRAM

Modem: Lucent 56K V 90 PCI DF internal

I reinstalled XP for a friend as he had picked up a virus and a trojan. (It's not my machine.)

When I go to device manager I see the following:

Location: PCI bus 0, device 9, function 0
Device is working properly
No conflicts listed in resources

Diagnostics:

Hardware ID: Value= PCI/VEN_11C9&DEV_0041&SUBSYS_0041

OK, I did diagnostics and a modem query. Here are the results:

Open Comm

"The port that the modem is using is currently open by another application. Exit any application that may be using the port."

OK, went to task manager and can see not one application that might be using the port. Closed all running processes except the necessary.

If this were a desktop machine I'd simply move the PCI modem to another slot and hope that would take care of it--and it might.

Anyway, I admit I am an idiot when it comes to XP and will be grateful for any tips on how to resolve this.

TIA,

Doc

Ohhh...I did search the archives here and could not find an answer. Hope I have provided enough details and specs for someone to answer the question I have.

Try start-settings-control panel-system-hardware-device manager-open modem-rt click for properties-advanced-advanced port settings and select a different port.

please post back with the fix that worked so we may help others. Thanks.

Thanks per:

Only problem is I should have mentioned I'd tried that and nom matter which com port I use I still get the same error message.

Also, this laptop was running fine (but slow due to virusses and trojans) and had no connectivity issues before reimaging the drive.

One change only: He was running AOL 8.0 before and I had to install AOL 9.0.

Yeah...I KNOW AOL is s--- and am trying to convince him of how bad it is and too expensive--but he has a "wife factor."

She loves AOL and he loves her. She loves him too but won't give up AOL.

Anyway, I doubt AOL is the issue as I can't even do a modem query with success. THen again--perhaps it could be the problem?

Thanks Again,

Doc
