I reformatted my computer, installed ME, then the XP upgrade. I currently have 2 ISP's, neither are working now. I used my laptop to get the current driver for my Lucent Win Modem, which is supposed to work with XP. The modem dials, does the handshake thing, but then hangs and sounds like a jet plane (which never lands). It never connects, using either ISP.

I had this problem before when I upgraded from ME to XP, without doing the reformat. I checked my old post here, and at that time I thought the solution was the right driver - but now that's not solving it.

If I go to Con. Panel, Internet Conn., "set up or change your Internet Conn.", there is nothing in the Dial-up settings box. This doesn't make sense to me because if I go to Device Manager, it shows my modem. Also, if I query the modem it shows a bunch of feedback (so I think it at least thinks it working).

I'm at a loss here - does anyone have any ideas for me??

Thanks in advance.

When you open My Network Places, click on the left pane "View network connections". You should have a dialup connection for your ISP listed there. If not, you will need to create one or two in this case for a dialup connection. What ISP are you using to connect with?

I believe XP Home uses the Internet Connection in place of My Network Places, but configuring should be similiar.

You can setup your internet connection by going to IE> tools> internet options> connections> setup.

For you information, next time you need to reinstall WinXP it is not necessary to pre-install ME. All that is needed to have the install disk available. When you start installing XP you will be asked to provide proof of a qualifying upgrade path. At that time supply the path to the ME disk and you will be allowed to install XP.

If I go to Contrl Panel, then Network Connections, there is no ISP listed, just a red "X" over the LAN/HI-speed Internet. So, if I go to "Create a new connection", a New Connection Wizard opens up. When I get to the sect. "How do you want to connect?" I have 3 choices, "Choose from a list of ISPs", or "Set up manually" or "Use the CD from the ISP." I don't have a CD, I don't know how to set it up manually (but I could try), so I choose from the list. In this case I chose Compuserve. I follow the instructions for "Current Member", Compuserve goes through it's whole installation stuff, it gets to the dialing part, sounds like it's connecting...then just hangs.

When I used the "Modem Troubleshooter" it said if you hear dialing but it doesn't connect your settings are probably wrong. But I'm not sure which settings. My gut tells me this is where the problem is...something with the settings. Is there a list of settings I should check/change?

Thanks for your help!

You can test your modem by putting in a cell phone number and then dialing. If your or a friends cell phone rings you know its not hardware.

Most likely you have to configure the logon account and password for your ISP for it to work.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Try the setup manually. Need the number with any prefixes that you dial into. Username and password.

It sounds like you don't have the plone cabling connected right. If the modem isn't actuall connected to a working line the modem will go thru the motions but of not be able to connect. Verify you don't have the cable plugged into the TELEPHONE port.

If you have already setup the modem look in device manager to verify the modem is working correctly. Under the modem listing in Device manager there should be a tab called diagnostics. Under that tab there is a query button. You should get an OK if the modem is configured right.

OtheHill,
When I follow that path, the "New Connection Wizard" opens up (see my post above). Both Earthlink and Compuserve try to connect, but fail. Their icons are on my desktop and they are listed in All Programs, so why isn't one of them listed under Network Connections or in the Dial-up and VPN settings box (CP>Internet Properties>Connections)? It's like Earthlink or Compuserve won't install all the way because they can't connect(?), so I think the questions is, why can't they connect?

Just for my knowledge - would it benefit me to reinstall XP again, this time without pre-installing ME? What's an upgrade path?

Upgrade path means previous versions of Windows that qualify for you to use the upgrade version (cheaper) of the newer OS. Not avery MS product qualifies.

I wouldn't bother unless you feel up to it.

I would try removing the modem. Boot to Safe mode go to Device Manager and remove all instances of the modem from there and reboot. WinXP MAY be able to configure the modem without any drivers being supplied. Depends on how old the modem is. If you know XP doesn't have the drivers then supply the path the the CORRECT drivers when prompted.

If the modem has no special features that you use I am guessing that XP can isntall and configure it. Special features are TAD/fax/voice, that sort of thing. If you use any of those, then have the driver ready and supply it.

I checked that it's plugged in to the right socket. I also called my cell phone from the computer and it worked. I'm using the same phone line to connect now (I keep switching back and forth). I really think it's something with XP. Last time this happened was after upgrading to XP on the computer. I thought then it was the driver that saved the day.

I went through the manual setup and now at least the internet connection "Earthlink" shows up under Network connections.

When I use modem diagnostics and query, a bunch of stuff comes back, some of it says "success", so I think that's a good sign. The Device Status says it's working propery.

An interesting fact - the modem says it's on COM3, but there's no COM3 under Device Manager. That's wrong isn't it? Can I just switch it to COM2 and see what happens??

You mean physically remove the modem? That scares the bajeez out of me.

When I downloaded the new driver, it was a zip file. I copied the zip onto CD, transferred it over, and extracted it and let it do its thing. When I checked Device Manager, the driver had changed appropriately. So I shouldn't worry about that then right? I'm wondering if I should start Googling for another one just in case. The one I got was from Modemsite.

Either of these links will provide the additional settings you will need. You can probably manually type in notepad the cis.scp text and then name it cis.scp. The text for the script is near the end of the pdf in the first link.

http://community.compuserve.com/n/d...

http://info.aol.co.uk/compuserve/fa... also has the settings needed to access Compuserve.

Being that the modem dials and makes a squealing noise(handshaking) it probably is a modem setting. Hope this helps!

Sorry OtheHill, I know what you meant (I think I'm getting tired). I did the Safe Mode thing and got rid of the modem. On reboot it shows the modem as my old one, the one that used to work with ME (Lucent Win Modem). I tried connecting with it just to see, but no dice.

If the modem query showed sucess and you cna dial other numbers then it is your settings for the ISP or something else in XP.

I am wodering how you still have Icons for both the ISPs on your desktop if you formatted and installed ME and then XP? Did you re-install the software for the ISPs when still in ME prior to upgrading?

No, I added the ISP's after installing XP, but didn't understand why they weren't showing up in Network Connections. Now I've got Earthlink showing up because I did the manual thing.

I went to Microsoft and it says this is a known issue with my modem (Lucent Win) and my computer (HP Pavilion) when upgrading to XP. Then it says to contact HP (gee, thanks).

Went to HP, and am downloading another driver as I type this. I don't even know why except I'm running out of ideas.

SysLock - thank you for the link - I'm reading through that while waiting for the download. So far it's telling me how to set up the connection manually, which I've already done. I'll keep looking though...

When installing the new modem driver, am I supposed to be doing something with the old one, like removing it?

If it is an .exe file then it will update itself. If the driver is an .inf file you need to go to the modem and update manually.

Modems are for the most part obsolete. See if you can pickup one from a friend or even from a cast off machine.
