Hi,
I have a Toshiba Tecra S1 with a Centrino processor 1.4Ghz and 512MB ram with XP Pro installed. I attempted to connect to the internet via my internal modem (TOSHIBA Software Modem AMR) but the message I receive is "Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly". So, I opened the Device Manager and searched for any conflicting devices and found none. So I tried to query the modem and I receive the following message "The port that the modem is attached could not be opened". The system states that the modem is connected to COM 3 and that it is working correctly. Can anyone help?? Is this a hardware issue?

Can't help but I have the same error with the same model of laptop and OS. I've tried un-installing and re-installing the modem - no joy. I've check to make sure nothing else is running in the task manager - nothing there but I still get the error message!
Can someone please help?

Chuan and Kay: some ideas to consider;
1. check that the modem port is enabled in the BIOS.
2. mjlemon said: "solved it by going into Task Manager and disabling or removing (systematically) any Palm, PC Sync, or other syncronization software or programs that were running. When that didn't work, the only thing that made it all work was to disable "servicelayer.exe" in Task Manager under "Processes." I didn't delete it because I don't know what it does but it allowed my Nokia to work as the Modem. I explained my probalem to Nokia and the Tech people couldn't fix it and referred the problem back to Finland!"
3. if you already have an active broadband connection, you must disconnect the existing broadband connection to establish the new connection. Q279658
4. if you are running a program that monitors the phone line (for example, a fax program), you may receive the error message.
5. if you are using RAS, try this:
click Remote Access Service, and then click Properties.
if the type of modem listed indicates that the kernel-mode TAPI driver is still being used [that is, it lists the type as "Modem (modem.inf)"], click the port, and then click Remove.
click Add to add the driver supplied with Windows XP for this COM port.
click Continue and restart your computer when prompted to do so.

6. the error can mean that the modem is not installed properly on the COM port.
7. if this is a dial-up connection, the COM port that the network connection attempted to use is already in use by another active network connection or another process (for example, a phone line monitoring program, such as a fax program).
quit the application that is blocking the use of the COM port.if this is a virtual private network (VPN) connection, the VPN device that the network connection attempted to use cannot be opened.

8. http://www.modemhelp.net/dunerror/error_633.shtml
says:
1. Click Start, goto find, and click files or folders.
2. Search for telephon.ini.
3. If you find it then rename it to telephon.old or telephon.bad.
4. Click on Start, Run, then type tapiini.exe, press Enter.
5. Reboot.
6. It is also possible that the modem is not setup correctly. Check the modem and possibly Uninstall and reinstall it.
7. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Dial Up Adapter.
8. Make sure that no other programs are using your modem. Fax software, Supervoice, etc...
9. Ctrl-Alt-Delete, if you see RNAAPP loaded, then go to the RNAAPP fix page at:

9. http://www.modemsite.com/56k/duns633.asp
says:
"This error can occur if:
The modem is actually in use - make sure you don't have other applications that are using the modem. Applications that can use the modem include fax software, terminal software (like HyperTerminal), as well as voice software including software that can make your modem an answering machine or speakerphone.
One way of seeing all running applications is to press CTRL+ALT+DEL and look at the Task List or Task Manager. This will display the actual program names - it may be difficult to pinpoint which, if any, programs are accessing the modem. Terminating tasks are about the only way - however, if you terminate certain tasks, your system may crash or become unstable.
The telephone.ini file is missing or damaged - If the telephone.ini file is missing or damaged, you can create a new one by running Tapiini.exe - this file is in the \windows\system folder. Before you run this, rename the telephone.ini file and reboot your PC if it already exists. Then, run the tapiini.exe file. This program will run very quickly and may not appear to do anything. You can verify the program created the telephone.ini file by searching for it.
The telephone.ini file is a Microsoft Windows file that stores settings for all TAPI-enabled applications including DUNS.
Make sure the modem named in the DUNS entry matches the name of your installed modem - You can check the name of your modem in ControlPanel->Modems.Windows XP - Can occur if another device's driver has a conflict with the modem driver. MS KB 324760 indicates this can occur with older Palm Desktop HotSynch Software."
