I have a problem with a US Robotics 56k external modem.

If the modem is not switched on before startup it isnt recognised as being present on the com port (com1 or com2)
and the only way to make it active is to reboot or do a partial reinstall of the modem and it is then detected.

In all other areas the modem works fine and is ok if turned on before startup. I never used to have this problem under win98SE.

Is there a solution? (other than having the modem on before startup)

I have the same problem Same modem (well mine is OEM) I use it for a old fax program called Bitware the best fax program, I'v spent $100's on others. I uninstalled the modem then installed bitware and it seems to work fine. And now windows doesn't reconize the modem but the program does. Don't really know why. But it works.

If it ain't broken don't fix it... Tweak it!

I would go into my CMOS and deselect AUTO for the com port and assign it to a permanent addresses, ie, Adr 02F, IRQ 3. This would ensure that the path to the modem is always the same, even when the modem is off. To guarantee success, goto the Device Manager, select the correct settings from the CMOS and deselect Use Automatic Settings. This dynamic address problem is also common with serial cameras and that fixes it.

Hi, I have the same problem with an Sportster 33.6 Voice. The problem with is that Windows XP detects the modem as being an internal modem not as an external one. That's why he does not recognise the modem when he is not powered on at boot time. For Windows, the modem card has been removed...
I had the same problem with my WIN2000 but I was able to solve it by reinstalling the modem and choosing the external driver manually from the list.

Note that, when installing automatically, Windows XP first finds the external (and right one) modem but then overrides it with the PNP internal modem.

My problem is now in Windows XP : I don't find the Sportster drivers in the list of Windows XP. It seems that when you manually want to select a driver, it only gives you the really old models. Can someone tell me where I can find the drivers for the sportster modem so I can tell WINDOWS XP that it's an external modem and not an internal !!!

Thx !

Tom
