hi.. i accidently deleted the system32.exe file from c:\windows\system32 folder... pls tell how i can retrieve it or repair it using WinXp ??

use the system restore option.
its quite difficult to delete this folder are you sure youve deleted it and its no6t just hidden

If your XP is still working and you think that you deleted a System file, then insert the XP-CD, go to RUN, type into the line
sfc /scannow and click OK. This will replace all missing or corrupt System Files. (System Files only of course)Cheers de Peter

In winXP sfc is a command line tool. You'll have to type cmd in the run dialoge box > enter , then type sfc/scannow.

Thnx for the help but it does'nt creates a new system32.exe ...i m hoping some kind soul will upload their system32.exe file for me to download plssssss :D ...i would really appreciate it and i hope u dont send viruses...

I agree with kinel, I don't believe there is such a file in xp. I believe you might have deleted a file (system32.exe) but it might have been put there by a trojan horse. Run a virus scan!

if isnt part of XP then there shouldnt be anything about it in the registry. right? so i looked and found it in there:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
in that folder there is "Shell" with a value of "Explorer.exe C:\Windows\System32\system32.exe" i looked on a friends comp and his value for shell was only "Explorer.exe"
So i deleted the other part"just as precaution i suggest backing up your registry first"

pitotte is right, i've had the same problem with it saying "missing system32.exe"
type "regedit" in to the run command then go to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
in the "winlogon" folder scroll down till you see the "shell" icon the value should only be "explorer.exe"

First and foremost a BIG thank you.
I had the exact problem today. It came from a strain of the IRC-sdbot virus, which is seemingly getting widespread - the source code for this virus is easily found on the web.
Anyhoo, I was driven insane convinced that I had deleted system32.exe and was screwed.
This virus also stops your system from being able to restore.
The steps for sorting it out are exactly as you say, just find the registry key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon)and amend it.
However you still cannot restore your system so be sure to run a virus check, then disable system restore (right click on my computer, click properties and disable the restore).
This means you lose all previous restore points, but just reboot, follow the same steps to turn it back on - be sure to create a restore point right away!)
Thanx again guys - you cured an all day headache!
